How to Build UTM Parameters for Pinterest

  1. 1

Paste the destination behind the Pin

Enter the page the Pin links to. TrimLink detects Pinterest and suggests utm_source=pinterest.

  2. 2

Name campaigns by theme, not by date

Pinterest traffic is seasonal and long-lived. autumn_recipes will still make sense next year; august_2026 will not.

  3. 3

    Separate Pin formats

Use utm_content for standard_pin, idea_pin, or video_pin. Formats perform very differently and Pinterest keeps changing which one it favours.

  4. 4

    Split organic from promoted

Promoted Pins should use utm_medium=paid_social so your ad results never blend into your organic ones.

Pinterest Tracking Tips

Pins have a long tail

Unlike most social posts, a Pin can drive traffic for years. Evergreen campaign names are worth more here than anywhere else.

One destination, many Pins

Teams commonly create several Pins for the same page. Without distinct utm_content values you cannot tell which creative earned the click.

Watch for repinned links

When someone repins your Pin, your tagged URL travels with it. That is useful — the traffic still attributes to you — but it means clicks may arrive long after the campaign ended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do UTM parameters affect how a Pin performs?
No. Pinterest does not rank Pins by URL cleanliness, and the parameters do not change the destination. They only add attribution data for your own analytics.
Should I tag every Pin individually?
Tag every distinct creative, not every Pin. If you post five different images for the same article, give each a different utm_content so you learn which visual works.
Why is Pinterest traffic showing up months later?
That is normal. Pins circulate through search and repins long after posting, which is why date-based campaign names age so badly on this platform.
